Sunday Scoop: Great Grandma's Peach Ice Cream
Another vintage recipe has found its way from my family's collection to my freezer, and I simply couldn't resist sharing this gem. Our ice cream series continues with a sophisticated twist—a luxuriously creamy peach ice cream that elevates the humble backyard peach to restaurant-worthy heights.
So far, we've journeyed through a refreshing lemon sherbet, classic strawberry ice cream, and vibrant raspberry sorbet. Now we're adding this crown jewel: a peach ice cream so rich and velvety it practically begs for an elegant after-dinner moment, perhaps paired with a splash of Southern whiskey. Because really, when life gives you peaches, why not honor the South's most beloved flavor combination?
This particular recipe bears the careful handwriting of either my great-grandmother Clara Baker or her daughter Mary Lou—the elegant script makes it difficult to determine which family matriarch penned these precious instructions. What I can say with certainty is that it's wonderfully approachable yet utterly decadent, striking that perfect balance between homespun comfort and sophisticated indulgence.
The more I dive into these family recipes, the clearer it becomes that ice cream making was practically a family tradition. My great-aunt Sally and her husband Bob were legendary for their frozen treats at the grand gatherings they hosted on their sprawling cattle ranch—plenty of space for big celebrations and even bigger appetites for homemade ice cream.
There's something magical about continuing these sweet traditions, one scoop at a time.

A Perfect Bridge to Summer
As we bid farewell to spring's final days, there's no better way to welcome the approaching summer than with this luscious peach ice cream. June 1st marks that sweet spot when peaches are just hitting their stride—still carrying spring's gentle promise but brimming with the bold flavor that summer demands.
This recipe is beautifully uncomplicated, relying on just five perfect ingredients to create something truly extraordinary. Fresh peaches take center stage, their natural sweetness enhanced by just enough sugar to let their flavor shine. Rich cream and freshly whipped cream create that signature velvety texture, while a touch of vanilla adds warmth and depth without competing with the star of the show.
What makes this recipe special isn't complexity—it's the harmony of premium ingredients treated with respect. Great-grandma Clara (or Mary Lou) understood that the best ice cream doesn't mask flavors; it elevates them. Each spoonful delivers pure peach bliss, creamy and smooth with just enough richness to feel indulgent.
The timing couldn't be more perfect. As temperatures climb and peach season reaches its peak, this recipe becomes your ticket to capturing summer's essence in frozen form. Whether you're planning a backyard barbecue, an elegant dinner party, or simply want to treat yourself to something special, this peach ice cream delivers restaurant-quality results from your own kitchen.
Ready to turn those beautiful peaches into frozen gold? Let's dive in.
Great-Grandma’s Peach Ice Cream
Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cook Time: 10 minutes | Chill Time: 3 hours | Freeze Time: 1 hour | Churning Time: 25-35 minutes | Yield: 1 1/2 quarts | Serves: 8-10
Equipment
Fine-mesh strainer (optional, for smoother texture)
Ice cream scoop for serving
Ingredients
3 cups fresh peaches, peeled and sliced (about 4-5 medium peaches)
1 cup granulated sugar, divided
2 cups single cream (light)
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
1 tablespoon plain cream
Pinch of salt
Instructions
Peel and slice peaches into ½-inch pieces. You should have about 3 cups.
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine sliced peaches with ½ cup sugar. Cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until peaches soften and release their juices.
Using a potato masher, gently break up the peaches to your desired consistency; leave some chunks for texture or mash completely for a smoother base. Stir in remaining ½ cup sugar until dissolved.
Remove from the heat and let the peach mixture cool to room temperature.
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whip the light cream on medium speed until it reaches a soft, silky consistency - not peaks, but a smooth, thickened texture that coats the back of a spoon.
Gently fold the cooled peach mixture and vanilla extract into the whipped cream until just combined. It should be smooth and creamy.
Place in the freezer for 1 hour to get very cold.
Pour the mixture into your ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions, typically 25-35 minutes, until it reaches a soft-serve consistency.
Transfer the churned ice cream to an airtight container and freeze overnight for a firm, scoopable texture.
Let stand at room temperature for 5-10 minutes before scooping if frozen solid.
Serve in chilled bowls with a drizzle of honey, a sprinkle of cinnamon, or alongside pound cake or zucchini bread. For an adult treat, pair with a splash of bourbon or Southern whiskey.
Chef’s Tips
About light cream: Light cream creates the perfect silky richness for this recipe. Unlike heavy cream, it won't form stiff peaks—instead, you're looking for a smooth, thickened consistency similar to the halfway point of whipping heavy cream.
No light cream? Substitute with 1 cup heavy cream + 1 cup whole milk to achieve the same consistency and fat content.
Peach perfection: Choose ripe but firm peaches that give slightly to pressure. If peaches aren't quite ripe, the cooking process will help develop their sweetness.
Make-ahead tip: The peach base can be prepared up to 2 days in advance and stored covered in the refrigerator.
Texture options: For ultra-smooth ice cream, strain the cooked peach mixture through a fine-mesh sieve before cooling.
Special Diets
Note: Substitutions can affect taste, texture, and moisture content.
Great-Grandma’s peach ice cream is naturally gluten-free.
For dairy-free alternatives try: coconut cream (full-fat canned) - it creates the richest, creamiest texture, cashew cream (soaked cashews blended with water) - has a very smooth neutral flavor, oat cream - is naturally sweet with a creamy consistency, or a heavy coconut milk + coconut milk blend - to mimic the light cream texture. Note that Coconut cream works best for achieving the silky consistency this recipe needs, while cashew cream offers the most neutral flavor.
For Sugar alternatives try maple syrup or honey (use ¾ cup and adjust to taste) or monk fruit sweetener (adjust to taste).
Where Ice Cream Meets Mixology
While this ice cream is perfect on its own, here's a sophisticated sipper that captures the same Southern peach essence:
Peach Bourbon Cocktail
2 oz Maker's Mark bourbon
1 oz peach simple syrup*
1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
Ice
Lemon peel and fresh peach slices for garnish
Peach Simple Syrup: Combine 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, and 1 cup peach juice in a saucepan. Simmer until sugar dissolves, then cool completely.
Method: Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Strain over fresh ice in a rocks glass. Garnish with a twist of lemon peel and a fresh peach slice.
The perfect grown-up complement to this elegant dessert—pure Southern hospitality in both glass and bowl.
